Hello once again to all Local Xtra readers, can I first of all say a massive thank you to everyone who contacted me with queries regarding my last column on aromatherapy. I really enjoyed answering each and every one of your questions. So do keep them coming in please. This month's health feature is all about reflexology; I hope it proves to be as popular as last month's article.

What is reflexology

Reflexology is a gentle non -invasive therapy, which is performed on the feet using various degrees of pressure to provide benefits to the client that are both physical and emotional. It is based on the principle that there are reflex zones in the feet that are linked by energy pathways to corresponding parts of the body and when pressure is applied it stimulates the movement of energy along these pathways.

Reflexology, like aromatherapy is also a holistic treatment. By working with the body's natural energy flow, blockages can be picked up and by applying pressure to particular reflex points these blocked channels may be cleared, therefore restoring a natural state of calm and balance to the body. When this happens we respond by feeling more positive and energised in our selves.

Origins of Reflexology
Reflexology is thought to have originated about 5,000 years ago in China and was also used by the ancient Egyptians. It was also practiced in India and Indonesia by people who held a belief that our feet are our connection with the earth's energies.

Reflexology became more westernised in the early 1930's by Dr William Fitzgerald who noticed during his medical training that pressure points on the body affected other parts along the same line, or zone within the body.
It is with thanks to Dr Fitzgerald and one of his students Eunice Ingham who has made reflexology what it is today.

Contra actions
Contra actions are what the client can experience either physically or emotionally after receiving reflexology, they can some times be uncomfortable to experience but they are a good positive sign that the body has responded to treatment and toxins are being eliminated. Contra actions usually occur within 24 hours after treatment. Here are some of the contra actions that may be experienced
• Headache
• Skin conditions may be aggravated
• Nausea
• Tiredness
• Client can either become either very emotional or weepy

Contra Indications
Some clients are unable to receive reflexology, this will be established during the first consultation, if this happens, usually the therapist will suggest another type of treatment that will benefit the client rather than excluding them from treatment altogether. Some contra indications include
• Contagious foot disorders
• Broken bones in ankles/feet
• Deep vein thrombosis
• Diabetes
• First 3 months of pregnancy
• Severe bruising
• Recent operations
• Arthritis of the feet
• Severe circulatory disorders

Benefits of Reflexology
Reflexology although a very gentle and relaxing treatment to have, is also one of the most powerful of the holistic therapies. It works on every organ of the body and is fantastic if you want to detox your body.

When you book in with your therapist for a reflexology you can expect to be asked questions regarding your health and diet, this helps the therapist get a general idea of the lifestyle you lead, and there fore they can develop a treatment that is exclusively for you.
The therapist in return will explain what the therapy will entail and what you can expect from receiving the treatment, it will also include what to expect after the treatment. Some of the benefits of reflexology include
• Cleanses the body of toxins and impurities
• Boosts circulation
• Skin tone is greatly improved
• Lymphatic drainage
• Gives a feeling of well being
• Increases blood circulation
• Revitalises energy levels
• Excellent for stress relief
• P.M.S
• I.B.S
